چکیده

Introduction A major problem for the planning of long-term space flights are deleterious effects of heavy ion radiation (HIR) on the eye sight of astronauts (light flashes), eventually leading to loss of their photoreceptor cells [1]. Until now, the influence of ionizing radiation (IR) on the development and the survival of photoreceptors and other retinal cell types is only poorly understood. Therefore, mimicking formation of a 3D-retinal tissue, histotypic reaggregates (retinal spheroids) were used as an in vitro model for the investigation of retinal development after IR. In this ongoing work we intend to investigate the responsiveness of different retinal cell types to IR and also their capacity to form histotypical structures following IR treatment.

Does Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?

MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields.  While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and h...

Reduced DNA damage in tumor spheroids compared to monolayer cultures exposed to ionizing radiation

Background: Several cell lines when cultured under proper condition can form three dimensional structures called multicellular tumor spheroids. Tumor spheroids are valuable in vitro models for studying physical and biological behavior of real tumors. A number of previous studies using a variety of techniques have shown no relationship between radiosensitivity and DNA strand breaks in monolayer ...

Track detection on the cells exposed to high LET heavy-ions by CR-39 plastic and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)

Background: The fatal effect of ionizing radiation on cells depends on Linear Energy Transfer (LET) level. The distribution of ionizing radiation is sparse and homogeneous for low LET radiations such as X or γ, but it is dense and concentrated for high LET radiation such as heavy-ions radiation. Material and Methods: Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1) were exposed to 4 Gy Fe-ion 2000 keV/...

Assessment of polymer composite reinforced with nanomaterial against ionizing radiation

Introduction: Unwanted exposure of ionizing radiation may result in carcinogenesis, cell mutations, and organ failure. High-atomic number elements such as lead, tungsten, bismuth have been traditionally used for radiation protection. Theoretical and practical studies have shown that a variety of shielding materials e.g. polymer composites (PCs) can be used for attenuation of th...

Effects of gamma radiation on adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells of human breast tissue

Background: During radiation therapy, stromal cells surrounding the tumor (e.g mesenchymal stem cells) may affect the treatment outcomes. We aimed to investigate the effects of gamma radiation on the mRNA expression of cytokines, DNA damage and population doubling time (PDT) of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs). Material and methods: ASCs were enzymatically extracted from breast tis...
